Leave entitlements
Every employee has service calculated at the end of each pay period, based on their pay activity. The rules for calculating service are complex, and vary by employment agreement, tenure, leave type and pay activity (eg. periods of leave without pay).
The ‘total length of service’ is held as a number of days for each employee in the Education payroll system. For teachers and principals, this is the number of days service at a State or State-integrated school.
Important:
Ensure you read the employee’s employment agreement carefully for full details of their leave provisions.
See the Ministry of Education's website: Employment agreements
Contact NZ School Trustees Association if you need help to interpret employment agreement details.
Sick leave entitlement for teachers and principals
Every pay period, each employee’s ‘total length of service’ value is compared against the service required to receive their next sick leave entitlement.
When a teacher or principal has accumulated sufficient service to reach the next tier, they will receive their next entitlement. The tier code will be updated and the new entitlement will be added to their sick leave balance.
See Sick leave entitlements for teachers and principals for tier code tables.
The updated sick leave balance, new tier code, and date of last entitlement show on the School Annual Accrual report and the School Leave report.
Sick leave entitlement for non-teachers’ sick leave
Every pay period, the employee’s ‘total length of service’ value is compared against the service required to receive their next sick leave entitlement. When they have accumulated sufficient service, the new entitlement will be added to their sick leave balance. See Sick leave entitlements for non-teachers for a table of sick leave entitlements for non-teaching employees.
The updated sick leave balance and date of last entitlement show on the School Annual Accrual report and the School Leave report.
Annual leave entitlement for non-teachers
Term-time only non-teaching employees receive their annual leave entitlement at the end of each year.
See Annual leave for term-time only non-teachers.
Non-teaching 52-week employees accrue a portion of their annual leave entitlement each fortnight. For example, a 52-week worker with 20 days entitlement will have 0.767 days added to their annual leave balance each fortnight.
See Annual leave for 52-week non-teachers.
The annual leave entitlement shows on the School Annual Accrual report and the School Leave report.
